The implant can definitely do this, but it’s under an alternate setting. If the character’s native language is Japanese, it will assume the character will know kanji as well.

It’s under a Settings window in her implant. It goes like this:

General > Settings > Preferences > Language > Translation > Input > Japanese > Level > Beginner > Mode > Hiragana > Hiragana Only > Kanji Disable

Hopefully she won’t have trouble finding it.
