In Manjoume's case here, its mostly just being able to perceive and talk to them--he's not like the protag or another character in the series that shares his soul with a duel spirit or has some kind of psychic influence over them or anything like that! He kind of drew the short straw of being the guy that just gets to see and hear the really annoying spirits, haha.
